MBMHC Business Statement

Marcella Barnes Modern Homestead Community Business Statement

Summary
The MBMHC aims to complete it’s goals through utilization of members, volunteers and donations to: carry out sustainable land management in order to provide food for community members in need; to provide education and research on permaculture practices; to provide affordable sustainable housing; and eventually to operate a school, foster home, and continuous care retirement community.

Methods
The MBMHC will be operated on land that is both privately owned (130-150 acres), as well as land owned by the nonprofit itself (approx 10-30 acres). There are different options for obtaining the land loan, discussed separately. The following methods will be utilized to provide funding for the organization:
-Donation bins at classes, community events, community garden, and market
-Income from working MBMHC members and owners
-Market sales
-”Taxes” on goods produced by MBMHC members with varying rates
-Fundraiser gourmet dinners, galas, auctions, etc
-Once established, seek grants to assist in long-term projects and research
-Ongoing donorship program
-Obtain items and equipment via donation or via shared use
-Kickstarter fundraiser

The first year or two will most likely not have the resources for as many community dinners as in the future, and will have a high expense to income ratio as we establish landscape, livestock herds and plants that can take anywhere from one to 80 years to reach full maturity (most are on the lower end or somewhere in between). With project excitement, volunteer work and initial donations, we will be able to make it past this hump and get to a point of steadily increasing growth.
